Lock Down - For Real
Friday, December 14, 2007, 03:30 PM
So today we actually put our lock down knowledge into play with a real lock down drill. I had 4 students in my room for tutoring. We locked ourselves in the room and calmly discussed what was going on. All of the kids knew what was happening. I’m sure their parents and teacher had already explained what was going to happen. I never told them that we were pretending that someone with a gun or who wanted to hurt us was in the building. I just said that someone who was scary was in the building and they shouldn’t be. But they knew. They all asked questions like “What if someone gets shot?” “What if they have an axe and get in the room?” It is horrible enough that we have to have these drills. But it was seriously heartbreaking to look into an innocent first grader’s eyes, listen to these valid questions and explain to them that unfortunately there are people out there who might do something like this and we needed to practice in case it happened. ( 3 / 114 )School Lock Down
Thursday, November 29, 2007, 05:38 PM
So. yesterday at work (elementary charter school) we had a meeting after school. No big deal. We have a meeting every Wednesday after school. And then…. we had a special training. This training was for a "school emergency situation". We watched a video given to all schools by the Texas attorney general. Then we discussed and reviewed procedures for our school in the case of an unwelcome guest, including communication room to room, locking our doors from the inside, staying down and away from doors & windows, getting kids out of the hallway and how to alert officers from the inside of your room that there is an injury, death or if the intruder is in your room. Since Columbine, it's probably not a big surprise to anyone that teachers have training about these particular situations. But for some reason, this "dramatization" grieved me to the core. Maybe it's because when I was growing up we only had fire drills and tornado drills and now we have to add "lock down drill" to that list. Maybe it's because of it made school shootings a reality, more than a horrible news story. Whatever triggered it, I am grieved that this training is a necessary part of our world in our society today.[ add comment ] | permalink |

( 2.8 / 108 )A Whole Week Off
Wednesday, November 21, 2007, 04:57 PM
Well, I only have about 2 things knocked off of my to do list for this week. Why is that? By now, my apartment should be spotless and completely organized. I should have called all of my out of state friends to catch up on life and I should have my Christmas shopping done. Why is it that these things aren't finished? Why is that I find so many other things to do besides what's on my to do list? For example... why am I blogging right now instead of getting my laundry together? I'm not just procrastinating, I'm putting things off... and I bet I start complaining next week about not having enough time to get things done, which is completely ridiculous. I've had so much time this week to do whatever I want..... :) I'll have to watch what I complain about!! Life is good. I pick up job #2 on Friday this week! I actually can't wait to start working b/c all the money I make will be my wedding money!!!! YEAH! Like I said. Life is good. [ add comment ] | permalink |
